Kanyon is born!!! and we start our Baltic Capitals Cruise - Days 1, 2, 3, & 4? ICELAND

We got back from Washington/ Oregon, unpacked and took 1 day to mow and water our yard in Deweyville. The next day we drove to Neola to mow and water our yard there and do laundry and pack for the next 2 weeks.  Saturday, June 21, we left early to drive to Denver.  Jessica and Andrew are driving, Doug, Misty and kids are driving and we are driving while Heidi is in the hospital in Kansas, after a LONG night, still trying to have her baby!  We were all texting and worrying but FINALLY at 1:03pm (Kansas time)
Kanyon Ray Saunders  was born!
Kanyon Ray Saunders
so grateful to have him here and healthy
and both Mom and baby are okay!

Relieved that Heidi, Sam and kids are all doing well - we went to bed early.  We start a 2 day trip with NO sleep after tonight.  We had a great hotel and in the morning we called and talked with Heidi, learned all the details about the birth and our wonderful new grandson, Kanyon.  I can't wait to snuggle with him in 2 weeks when we return.

Sunday, June 22
Denver International Airport

We flew Icelandair
We left at 5:20pm and after a 7 hour flight
we arrived in Iceland at 6:50am.
The time changes on this trip are too confusing to try
and keep straight but it was daylight so we started touring and
enjoying an 18 hour layover in Iceland!!!

purple and white flowers everywhere!

or tundra look

The BLUE LAGOON

Iceland is green
and Greenland is ice (so I have heard).

big, hairy Icelandic horses everywhere!

Porsmork Waterfalls

Heading to the Southern point of Iceland
a town called "Vic".
Everything is a bright, wet, vibrant green color.
It is beautiful!

Vic
I ate samloka m/skinku, osti og fronskum
(ham & cheese with french-fries) for lunch.

Really BLACK sand beaches.

a cave and cliff of hexagonal stones

Now we are heading inland - driving the
"Golden Circle" to Skalholt, a tiny town
with an OLD "year 1056"  church and cemetery.

Iceland's flag

We are on
"The Edge of the Artic Circle"

A town called Geyser.
Thermal hotpots on a very small scale.

This is Gullfoss or The Golden Waterfall.
It is spectacular!

On to Pingvellir which is a National Park

Here is where you can see the
"Crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge".
there were fault cracks, waterfalls and rivers.
We really were Sleepless in Iceland
a shirt I bought in Pingvellir.
 On into Reykjavik
we saw the Sun Voyager Viking Ship Scupture

Hallgrimskirkja

We rode an elevator and climbed 32 stairs
to the top

Wes is a Viking!
a Viking ship museum

 Reykjavik Harbor
Back at the airport - it is 9:30 pm in Iceland
(3:30 pm Utah time)
Our flight is 1:30 A.M. Tuesday morning

It's still light outside so we are confused but Doug is sleeping

 Time to go to Denmark!
We left Iceland at 1:15am - 3 hour flight
arrived in Copenhagen, Denmark 6:00am
(which is 10:00pm Utah time a day earlier)
too confusing....
We could have paid $20 each to ride the cruise line shuttle
to the ship but... to save money we followed the
cruise line internet directions to get to our ship.
"ride the Metro, S-Train and an easy 15min. walk"
It was HOT, lots of construction and the ship wasn't
docked where it was supposed to be!
2 1/2 hours later.... and lots of sore muscles and blisters...
We found our ship!

still a long walk

We boarded the ship, ate lunch and took afternoon naps

waking up for lifeboat drill and dinner

NCL Star Baltic Cruise map

sail away and evening show
then... back to bed.

  1. Wow! Iceland looks incredible! Also, looks like you crammed an entire vacation into 15 hours. Sad to hear you saved 20 bucks and got a very tired, hot, detour but certainly makes for a "heward" adventure!!!! Ha ha Great pictures!!!
