Our Road Trip continues NORTH

On Sunday, we left Heidi & Sam's house and drove North into
VIRGINIA - The Old Dominion or Mother of Presidents state.

I took this picture out my window in Roanoke, Virginia just as a
car sideswiped a semi truck in front of me! The car went spinning across the lanes
to the center wall where it hit/bounced and spun to a stop on the freeway!
We were able to steer around and miss it but it left me feeling pretty shaky.

We turned off the hwy. at Natural Bridge State Park and drove
on a little side road looking for the Foamhenge site that has been dismantled.
We didn't stop.  :(

We saw an Apple bushel basket water tower in
Mt. Jackson, Virginia.

We made it to Winchester, Virginia and Leisa & Dale's house.
We unloaded the car of all the stuff I had brought from Utah!

Monday, we drove into WEST VIRGINIA - the Mountain State
only 15 miles away.  We are going to Harpers Ferry.

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park

Harpers Ferry is an old small town turned into museums and shops
and historical attractions.  It was fun to walk around the town and explore.

This is a battle site where John Brown captured the
 U.S. Union Arsenal in 1859 that was located here.
 He was protesting slavery.

The confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

We walked for a short ways on the Appalachian Trail.

We hiked the hill up to the old church on
these uneven stone steps.

We hiked up to this historical rock overlooking the rivers.

This is Jefferson Rock,where Thomas Jefferson stood with
George Washington on October 25, 1783 and said,
"this scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic".

It was a spectacularly beautiful view.

Addison is such a happy traveler.

I got the National Park stamps!

We had lunch at Long John Silver's.

 

Tuesday, we ran errands with Leisa.   Addison got her 1 year shots :(
we went to antique stores in the area and Wes & I had lunch in "old town"
while Addison (and Leisa?) took a nap.

In the afternoon, after school for Will, we went to the Arboretum.

Cool old plantation house.
 Turns out it was where the "help" (servants) lived and the main house was
1/2 a mile away across the fields.

We went to Chick-fil-A for dinner to support Will's school fundraiser.
